Leather buying advice

You want advice. You want to be sure of your choice.

You want a nice model. You want a garment that stays nice for long. You want a leather garment that suits you well.  There are endless types of leather, making it nearly impossible to bring you up to speed on all the possibilities. Thicker, heavier skins aren’t necessarily of lesser quality. The use of them may be a concious design choice to achieve a more rugged look. What is important however is the way in which the skins were dyed.   Aniline leather is dyed in a bath briefly before the skins are reworked into a garment. Only the most pristine skins can be processed in this way as any imperfections would show up instantly. It gives the leather a deeper shine as it reflects light beautifully. It feels wonderfully soft and supple but it does require more care and maintenance than other types of leather. Skins which have undergone an intensive dying process will look duller and feel coarser to the touch. They may even resemble fake leather. This is sometimes done to achieve vibrant colours but can also be the result of having used poor quality skins. The dye is then used to camouflage imperfections leaving the pores of the skins saturated with dye.

You want to look great in your leather.

We start our journey with a good design pattern. This is something we’re adament about at Pelsland. If the fit isn’t right we don’t even take other aspects into account, as there is little the colour or style of it can do to rectify this.  Secondly, expert tailoring is required to make sure every stich and panel is perfectly finished. A few more technical aspects are of equal importance. At Pelsland we get the team together to try on and discuss every new model. Are the sleeves and cuffs wide enough? Does the collar do up high enough? Are the pockets designed and placed right? All these details are discussed at length.

Your leather has to stay beautiful as long as possible.

Your leather coat should stay beautiful for a long time. This is why we provide advice and maintance products which were tested thoroughly and proved to be useful to our customers. Leather is cared for in two ways: Through conditioning and protection.  Protecting the garment is done with a spray-on product which repels dirt and moisture. Lightly mist the coat every three to four weeks from a distance of 20 to 30 centimeters. This takes about a minute and is illustrated by the following clip. The second clip demonstrates the effect of this protective layer.  Secondly the garment will stay supple and colourfast by using a moisturising creme one a year. Simply apply this product with a cotton cloth and rub it in using circular motion.

Maintenance of leather has 2 facets: protection and hydration.

You need to apply a water- and dirt repellant protection regularly. It's very simple to do. And it takes 1 to 2 minutes. Not more than that. On the first video we show you how to apply this protection. We recommend that you do this 1 per month, during the months in which you wear your garment on a regular basis.

The second video shows you the effect of the treatment up close.

We also recommend the use of a hydrating cream, at least once per year. This helps maintain the softness of your leather and protects it's color.
